Henry Christian-slane

“The Keeper” Annual 2

Henry was born in New Zealand and studied graphic design at Auckland University of Technology, graduating in 2011 under the Vice Chancellor’s academic scholarship.

He set up a shared artist studio space/exhibition space on Queen Street, where he was able to work full-time as an artist and illustrator. He moved to London in 2014 to gain experience in commercial illustration, working at the digital agency Unit9 as a visual artist for one year. In 2015 he was the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Adam Portrait Award. Since then, Henry has worked as a freelance illustrator and artist for clients in London and New Zealand.

In 2017 Henry won of the young artist award at the London National Portrait Gallery, BP Portrait Awards. Narrative has always been an important part of his practice, from illustrating other people’s stories to writing his own.

I really enjoyed dark stories and characters when I was young. Hellboy and the Alien comics were some of my favorites and later on Hellblazer. On top of the darker stuff I also really enjoyed Calvin and Hobbes and Tintin. I also read regular books a lot and really enjoyed Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy and the Vampire’s Blood series by Darren Shan.
